2018 has just drawn to a close may we each reflect with gratitude and reverence
on the many gifts we have received and the many doorways that have opened for
us throughout this last year….some with ease and some with anguish and many
gracefully in between. May we trust that they all bring us closer to
the knowing that contentment with what IS , may be the greatest gift of all.
May our oft times hard-earned growth in this past year move us closer to lives
lived in balance, in peace, and in harmony within our selves and with each
other and our world in the new year to come! And may our families, friendships, and
our communities support us in gathering the courage and commitment we need to
face and transmute the weight of the many global challenges we face into a
collective presence of promise, creativity, and the illumination of powerful
solutions. YES WE CAN! Axe Axe….so be it….Peace, love, and gratitude,

A HAPPY NEW YEAR! As 2017 has just drawn to a close may we each reflect with
gratitude and reverence on the many gifts we have received and the many doorways
that have opened for us throughout this last year….some with ease and some with
anguish and many gracefully in between.
May we trust that they all bring us closer to the knowing that
contentment with what IS , may be the greatest gift of all. May our oft times hard-earned
growth in this past year move us closer to lives lived in balance, in peace,
and in harmony within our selves and with each other and our world in the new
year to come! And may our families, friendships, and our communities support us
in gathering the courage and commitment we need to face and transmute the
weight of the many global challenges we face into a collective presence of
promise, creativity, and the illumination of powerful solutions.

I am looking forward to the new season and the changes it brings to life...especially the enlivened plants and flowers and trees...I. too, can feel that energy surge...new beginnings...a new cycle...renewal. It is palpable in even the slightest hint of cool in an evening breeze, a change in the night sky, every slightly darkened dinner time and early morning breakfast, every lone leaf that falls or shows a tinge of Autumn's golden hue. The late summer brought with it some very harsh and dramatically high temperatures and record setting heat indexes that seemed surreal! Just as it seemed we might need to start thinking about finding another more reasonable state to live in ( just kidding!), Hurricane Harvey showed up and dropped the temperature dramatically lower and brought rains that we humans and every being still alive in these parts had desperately longed for since June! The price was high for the people and places South of us and the losses suffered on the devastated Texas Coastline will require years to recover and heal. Our hearts go out to the folks who have lost their homes and businesses and cherished possessions...their stability and balance and certainty.... their world now turned upside down and hope drowned. May they all rise up from the wreckage of this experience with a deepened sense of what truly brings meaning and purpose to life here on Earth and what, in fact ,belongs to the realm of superficial. And may a strong sense of community arise in our consciousness and with it a commitment to respond through whatever means we we can muster, to share, to show we care and to help with the healing and well being in those places hard hit. If ever there was a time in our country when we must each search for and find ways to open and deepen our hearts, to reach across the lines and barriers we have constructed around our differences and find our common ground with others, it s now. Helping our neighbors in need is one pathway.
One of the things I love the most about music in general, and drumming and rhythm in particular, is that it is also a very powerful and consistent pathway to bridging our differences and discovering our common ground...our connections. Drumming and rhythm deepen our connection to our own spirits and our own hearts in ways that overpower even our own resistance or trepidation around self- awareness or self-revelation or the value of our own authenticity. Eventually, if we stay on the drummer's path and delve into rhythm and the awakening of our natural rhythmic sensibility, we realize how much strength and understanding and courage and wisdom and value resides in our own unique inner being and the need to look outside of ourselves for guidance and answers begins to wane. We are free to BE more of who we ARE and we realize that simply being who we are is the greatest possible gift we could give to the world. When we release the bondage of living our lives solely by the structures and expectations imposed on us by others and trust instead our own inner knowing, we blossom...we are charged up and enlivened ....empowered to honor and develop and share our own unique gifts and talents and creative potential with the world! Fall is the perfect time to discover the magic and the mystery inherent in drumming and the exploration of rhythm and the transformative possibilities they hold might just be a key to a new way of being in relationship to your self, to others, and to all things. Community music making can be a powerful tool in rebuilding our world Sherryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02768484970781145960noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6082843.post-5667695509674484092017-07-21T20:44:00.004-05:002017-07-21T20:44:40.797-05:00

Warmest wishes for a New Year overflowing with dreams fulfilled and new dreams visioned of a world at peace...peace within, peace with one another, peace with the natural world and peace with all beings. A world guided by compassion and deep wisdom....wisdom quietly understood through listening and learning with all of our senses to the natural rhythms of the world around us and trusting the innate intelligence of nature to teach us how to live more harmoniously and sustainably within the sacred circle of life. May we find and honor our place in the continuum of life...believing wholeheartedly in the possibility that this billion year dance called life on Earth can continue and thrive and provide a beautiful space for all of our children to call HOME. Let us together bring forth the necessary creative force to birth the changes and solutions to the multiple and potent challenges we face on Earth and let us enliven the Universal bonds that make us one family/one organism with heartfelt trust and hope and commitment...with art and music, and dance, and song, and an unfailing faith in love and possibility.
Still believing that even here....even now...a miracle can happen....
Much gratitude,
Hand Drumming 101"Discovering the Magic of Hand drumming"
Every Saturday at 10 am beginning November 21st & Wednesday @ 8pm beginning Nov.4th!

This is the ideal path for new students just starting out on the drummer's path as well as those who have already found their way to drumming and are just becoming more experienced and moving deeper into the art and practice of drumming. No previous drumming experience is required and all classes emphasize the balance between the value in creative individual self-expression and the value of unity and the oneness of the collective whole! Through music we break down the barriers that separate us and discover our common ground as a unified group creating a groove together while still honoring and developing our individual strengths and talents and the gifts that we bring to the circle through our own unique contributions to the music! Join us and let the musician within emerge!

Beyond Beginner Djundun Class
Every Wednesday @ 6:45pm

This class plays the big and powerful African bass drums, the three djunduns played with sticks that create the beautiful and powerful underlying bass line of the West African rhythms! We have djuns to share if you do not yet have your own and sticks are available for sale at Drumz as well, or bring your own! If you have always visioned yourself playing drumset or just find yourself sticking away on every desk, dashboard, and drum-like surface you encounter, THIS IS THE CLASS FOR YOU! Truly a fun and lively endeavor, playing djuns is something everyone can do with practice and it is deeply gratifying and highly expansive experience that brings you ALIVE in ways you never imagined! Join us. Please visit with Sherry at 512-791-9516 if you are interested in joining this class as it is not a beginner level but is just BEYOND beginner so may be perfect for you.

DrumSista Class
Every Tuesday @ 6:45pm
Drumsistas is an all-women's all level Drum Class that meets every Tuesday evening and plays both djembe and the djunduns. We learn many ensemble pieces from West Africa and we are building up a wonderful reservoir of music and rhythms and solo phrases to choose from for our big Spring Fundraiser concert in April. This class is not a commitment to participate in the Spring Concert but most of the women attending do plan to join in playing at the big concert In April with the Hildegirls, Susan Lincoln's big vocal ensembe because it is TOO FUN to pass up!All women are welcome to join this group though you must have your own drum and some hand drumming experience is helpful!

Krin Class
Every Tuesday @ 8pm
Join us for LOG DRUM class on Tuesdays and enjoy another stick drum experience from West Africa! Log drums have beautiful, natural, warm tones that are at once soothing and exciting! The rhythms are powerful and often electric! Ear plugs are recommended for this fun class with the unique log drum!Class begins Nov. 3rd.

Beginning Balafon
Every Saturday@11:15am
Balafons create the warm and mesmerizing melodies that accompany West African rhythms and songs. Made of dense hardwood with natural gourds as the resonators, these beautifully melodic instruments soothe the mind and soul in a way that is difficult to describe! There is nothing quite like playing music with others on balafon for attaining another state of being and an altered consciousness! One of my very favorite instruments, this xylophone like instrument is a wonder to play and a joy to behold!
Dear friends,
I look forward to seeing you soon somewhere along the drummer's path! I hope everyone is finding a way to RELAX more fully and more often this summer....slowing down the pace and smelling the proverbial roses...REALLY !!! We have had the blessing of WATER in early summer and with unusually cool temps in July ( thus far) the plants and trees and creeks and streams still seem SO beautiful and lush...we drummed for BALANCE on Saturday evening, July 11th, at The Community Drum Circle at DRUMZ ( Next Community Drum Circle is on Saturday evening ,August 8th. at DRUMZ from 8-9:30pm)....planetary balance and collective balance of our human consciousness, as well as internal and individual balance for each of us. May we all find time this summer to experience, appreciate, and honor nature and her amazing gifts to us and find ways to open our hearts more deeply and re-commit to placing our earth's needs and her healing at the very top of our to do lists. As we heal ourselves we are healing our Earth, and as we heal our Earth, we are healing ourselves...this we know.
Warmly, Sherry
PS
THE DJEMBABES PLAY FRIDAY NIGHT AT CENTRAL MARKET NORTH FROM 6:30pm-7:30pm and a second set from 8PM to 9pm!
